Balancing crop water requirements through supplemental irrigation under rainfed agriculture in a semi-arid environment

چکیده

Rainfed farming is a dominant agricultural system in Tigray, Ethiopia. However, rainfall characterized by short duration, intense and erratic subjected to late-onset early cessation, suggesting pressing need for Supplemental Irrigation (SI) fill the crop water demand. Understanding effects of SI during late-onset, or both, along with their underlying causes, critical knowledge gap globally. Although wheat one principal food crops it moisture stress growth stages, limiting its potential productivity. Studies specifically related impacts due on are non-existent. Here, we investigated agrometeorological characteristics variability, onset, length growing season evaluate use balancing rainfed farming. Meanwhile, using an on-farm experiment, also evaluated double-season (2017 2018) application (Pre), cessation (Post), combined (Pre + Post) yield productivity (WP) wheat. Yield WP were significantly (P < 0.05) affected higher grain (3298 kg/ha) (0.538 kg/m3) obtained from applying Pre Post. Applying Post has increased yield, biomass, 45.6, 27.7, 21.5% over Rain-fed farming, respectively. Thus, requirements inadequate distribution key improving production semi-arid environments. Particularly, both suggested greater regions.

increased water productivity of wheat under supplemental irrigation and nitrogen application in a semi-arid region

limitations of water and nitrogen in soil usually restrict plant growth. the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different amounts of supplemental irrigation at different growth stages and application of different rates of nitrogen fertilizer on grain yield and water productivity of wheat cultivars. a field experiment was conducted in the agricultural research station of shah...

Carbon losses by tillage under semi-arid Mediterranean rainfed agriculture (SW Spain)

Conservation tillage has been promoted as a solution to counteract constraints caused by intensive agriculture. In this work the effects of two conservation tillage systems, reduced tillage (RT) and no-tillage (NT) were compared to the traditional tillage (TT) in a long(15 years, RT) and short-term experiment (3 years, NT). Both experiments were carried out under semi-arid, rainfed agriculture ...

Estimated Water Requirements and Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni Crop Coefficient in Semi-Dry Climate under Lysimetric Conditions

Exactly estimating of water requirement is essential for water balance studies, design and management of irrigation systems and water resources management. Because of limited soil and water resources in Iran, for optimal use of water resources in the agricultural sector, it is necessary to determine the amount of water requirement by different plants in different climatological conditions. In o...

Irrigation Scheduling for Maize and Indian-mustard based on Daily Crop Water Requirement in a Semi- Arid Region

Maize and Indian mustard are significant crops in semi-arid climate zones of India. Improved water management requires precise scheduling of irrigation, which in turn requires an accurate computation of daily crop evapotranspiration (ETc). Daily crop evapotranspiration comes as a product of reference evapotranspiration (ET0) and the growth stage specific crop coefficients modified for daily var...
